Evelyn Glennie

One thing that I'll remember about her performance is that she put her movements into it. Also she used all different types of tones in her song. Another thing I will remember is that she seemed to know where all the keys were and what sounds and vibrations they made.

She changed what the audience heard by the distance of where they were sitting and the different sticks she used.

By saying "Each person experiences music in their own way" I think she meant that music is a different experience to everyone and that there isn't a specific way people experience music. Also I think not everyone enjoys the same music because of the tones of different types of music some is heavier and some isn't and that affects the experience.

Farmers market visit

For the farmer's market visit i interviewed Farmer steve. He is a famer/vender who also does home deliveries. He first started coming to that farmers market 15 years ago, and also goes to 2 other farmer's markets. He buys most all his food at the farmers market the only thing he buys at grocery stores is bananas. He also said farmer's market aren't doing well because of fast food places and also that grocery stores sell the same stuff as farmers markets so not as many people go to farmers markets as much. Another thing that he mentioned is that he sells for 2 other familys as long as he supplies 50% of the merchandise.
The Farmers market I went to was in poway it was a lot like I expected, but there weren't as many venders as I thought there would be. Apples were a lot less expensive than I thought and there weren't any items that were more expensive than I thought. I think I will probable go to a farmers market more often because there are a lot of great items.

Answer: it’s for environmental science, we’re learning about ecosystems.

Answer: Strawberries, artichokes, herbs, flowers, and onions.

Answer: it was the only place close enough we tried to find one near school but there wasn’t one available.

Answer: We eat them.

family discussion

For the discussion post I talked to my dad about food inc.

-What struck you?
Me: that there are some factories who abuse their animals to make cheap meat while there are some farms who humanely treat their animals even though they don't make as much money.
-Do you agree with this or disagree? Why?
Me: I agree with this because it's less selfish and it's better for us.
Dad: I think it's better for animals but harder to feed people and not practical for the way we consume things.
-How can you apply this to the real world?
Dad: I would prefer humanely killed meat more than cheap meat, but it's hard to know what type of meat you are eating
-What do you think?
Dad: We're not thinking about the animals we're about humans and they need to mass-produce to provide for human demand.

School daze dialectic journal

Quote: “people imagine that they’d like to see their children enter the workplace with really useful business skills but if they actually did so they’d immediately begin competing for jobs with their older siblings and parents, which would be catastrophic.”

Response: Something that strikes me about this passage is that Ishmael seems to really understand how schools work and also how jobs work just from watching. Even though Ishmael probable hasn’t had a human job before and he can see the way schools try to keep kids so they don’t enter the job market just by watching a little girl in school. I sort of agree with the author on this quote because why would you want to hire a kid when you can hire an adult with more life experience. Also because it seems very accurate of how people don’t have many jobs in this economy and population.

(With his feet up on his desk)

Orvill
Well it’s just that well um…. I got my paycheck yesterday… and well it didn’t have as much money as it used to.
(Nervously)

Mr. Bryan
Well how is that my problem? Is it my fault my stupid assistant hired you even though I told him specifically not to, and then died leaving me to deal with you? (Stands up and puts out his cigar)

Orvill
(Stairs deeply into the smoke of he cigar)
Sir my wife and kids are sick and I don’t have much money to pay off the bills and everything.

Mr. Bryan
Is that my problem?

Orvill
No sir, but please help out a little, have a heart!

Mr. Bryan
Are you insinuating that I’m heartless? Orvill you dare insult me when I have your future in my hands? You are FIRED!

Orvill
(Falls to his knees)
Please sir this job is all I have.
Scene II

Mrs. Bryan
TURN!
(In the passenger seat of Mr. Bryan’s car with him driving)

Mr. Bryan
(Calmly)
Easy Terri I’m an excellent driver that’s why we didn’t buy life insurance

Mrs. Bryan
“What?! Why on earth would you do that?”

Mr. Bryan
Why would I buy something like that for when I know I won’t need it ever? It’s just a waste of money

Mrs. Bryan
(Mumbles)
You greedy snake

(Mr. Bryan turns on the radio and calmly drives then sees a street cleaner and has a flash back.)

Mrs. Bryan
LOOK OUT!
(A car slams into them)
AHHHHH! WHY?!

(Mr. Bryan tries to stand up then falls then sees his wife and passes out as the ambulances come)

Scene III
(Mr. Bryan wakes up in a hospital bed and looks around to see a doctor)

Mr. Bryan
What’s going on doctor? Where’s my wife?
(Jumps out of the bed and grabs the doctor by the collar)
Tell me what’s going on

Doctor
(Avoids eye contact with Mr. Bryan)
Well when the car hit her side of the car the door bent and crushed her kidneys.

Mr. Bryan
Then why are you just standing here? Do something fix her!

Doctor
There’s just one problem, you don’t have insurance so you can’t pay for the operation that’s necessary.

Conscience
Greed, greed, music and greed

Mr. Bryan
(Shakes the doctor by the collar)
WHAT? Well how much would it cost to pay for it?

Doctor
About 40 thousand pounds.


Mr. Bryan
What! I don’t have that kind of money.

Doctor
Well I’m sorry sir you’ll just have to come up with the money

Scene IV
(Orvill enters)

Olga
How much money did you make dearest?

Orvill
(Setting his guitar down and hanging up his coat)
Not enough

Olga
You got a letter today from Mr. Bryan
(She hands him a letter)

Orvill
Oh? Maybe he wants me to work for him again
(Orvill’s facial expression grows darker as he reads the letter.)
Oh no that’s terrible

(Olivia, Liesel, and Olaf enter)

Olivia and Liesel
What’s going on?

Orvill
Mr. Bryan’s wife is in the hospital, and she might not make it

Olaf
Make what? I hope its pie. I like pie.

Orvill
No Olaf, I mean she might not survive.
(Grabs his coat and heads out the door)
I’m going to go down to the hospital

Olga
(Shouts)
Why should you? After all that man has done to us. He doesn’t deserve your pity.

Scene V
(The Doctor walks in to see Mr. Bryan sleeping)

Doctor
Mr. Bryan? We have news

Mr. Bryan
What’s going on?

Doctor
An anonymous donor donated a kidney to your wife this morning and even paid for the operation to transplant it.

Mr. Bryan
(Jumping in the air and spinning around)
Really? This is great! A miracle Ha ha!

Scene VI
(The Doctor enters)

Doctor
The operation was a success

Mr. Bryan
(Jumping and dancing)
Ha ha yes! But doctor you have to tell me who helped her

Doctor
Some man named Orvill

Mr. Bryan
Orvill? But I was so cruel to him. I have to go thank him.

Doctor
Well that will be difficult

Mr. Bryan
Why?

Doctor
Well the operation for him went wrong and he got infected

Mr. Bryan
What? That can’t be, where is he? I must see him!

Doctor
No you can’t his family is visiting him during his last few hours

Mr. Bryan
Last few hours?

Doctor
Yes, he will be dead before nightfall

Mr. Bryan
(Grabs the doctor by the collar)
No, this can’t be!

Scene VII
(Mr. Bryan drives to Orvill’ s house and knocks on the door)

Mr. Bryan
Hello? Olga? It’s me Mr. Bryan.

Olga
(Opens the door screaming)
You it’s all your fault you’re the reason he’s dead

Mr. Bryan
I’m really sorry about him and I’ve come to try to make up for it

Olga
No! You’ll never make up for it you’ve ruined 4 lives and you’ve lost one
(She screams and pulls out a kitchen knife)
You will pay for it!

Mr. Bryan
Olga wait
(Mr. Bryan pulls out a large wad of cash)
Here it’s yours I hope it’s enough to get your family through this

Olga
“IT’S NEVER ENOUGH NEVER AGAIN!
(Olga stabs Mr. Bryan, he falls to the ground bleeding then Olga collapses next to him. Olaf, Olivia, and Liesel enter)

Olaf
Do we still get to keep the cash?
(Quickly slapped by his sisters)

Technology

This article was about electric cars making a come back in 2010. General Motors is making one which will hopefully save there company, and a few other companies are trying their best to make a better electric car.

This topic is important because the cars are better for the Environment and probable save you a lot in gas money. Also these cars could lead to a cool new green way of transportation.

There are a lot of people wondering about if the companies will actually be able to make the cars but for all of the companies lots of people are already ready to buy them let's just hope they can follow through with their promises.

Some obstacles for the idea is that General Motors just recently survived a huge bank ruptcy so it might be hard for them to find money so they can produce the cars. Also they are depending a lot on this car to get them back on track.

Entertainment 2010

In 2010 T.V. will be even more unnecessarily complicated because they be able to watch T.V. on almost anything with a screen. You will be able to watch T.V. on net books cell phones and any other mobile device instead of just a big screen television.

It will be more efficient then unreliable 3G networking and will cost less too. After T.V. Analog was cut it freed up more broadcasting space.

In 2010 this idea will probable made a reality by the end of the year, and because of all the advancements in portable Internet it will probable be fairly easy to use.

I think some setbacks for this would probable being able to distribute it and also getting T.V. channels to agree to it. Also I would have to be expensive to update a lot of new portable devises.

Time Travelers Project Reflection

Project description
For this project we were given a civilization and had to study that civilization. We also choose either Government, Art and Architecture, science and Technology, or religion as a pillar. Then we had to choose an object to send back in time that would help the civilization survive. Then we would write a research paper on how our pillar effected our civilization.

Process
For the research paper we started out by just studying our civilization then with the first draft which was pretty much just a bunch of information then after a few drafts it began to have analysis and evidence of the information and became a stronger research paper.

Reflection
In this project I learned a lot about how civilizations work and how the government of the civilization affects how the civilization lives and if it survives. Some challenges I had were that I didn't have much information to research at first so that made my first draft a little bit harder to work with. If I did this project again I would try and find more information so my paper would have better evidence. I think this will help later on in life because in college and also further on in high school we'll have to write a lot of research paper and I would want them to be accurate.

Hero project reflection

I think a hero becomes a hero when they do something positive in your eyes. In this project we had to choose some one that we thought was heroic, interview, and then write a story of why they were heroic using the information from the interview. We had to do three or more drafts; this was hard for me because on one draft I didn’t write two pages so I had to do another one. In this project I learned a lot about perspective like how someone sees something could be totally different in some one else’s eyes. A challenge I encountered was that I didn’t get a lot of information from my interview so it was harder to write a two-page paper. If I did this project again I would probable try to be more prepared for the interview and remember how long the paper was supposed to be. A habit of mind I used in this project was evidence because we had to show why the person we chose was a hero using sensory detail.

What strikes me about this article is that there was so much trouble in making a number that means nothing, and makes me wonder what the process was when they came up with all the numbers. We decide who discovers what when it’s the first one who recorded proof of them discovering it. Mesopotamians discovered zero because they were the first to create and record them discovering it. I don’t think that the person who came up with the idea of zero was the same person discovered it because it could have been thought up a while ago but some one wrote it down and put it to use. I think map makers and sailors probable spread word of zero by traveling to so many places.

Code Blue
His eyelids snapped open he looked around the small dark room where he and the other interns stay. He hears the sharp sound of and alarm saying code blue, which in medical terms meant a life or death situation. He rushes down to the main room as fast as an African swallow, and sees some of his colleagues. “I heard there was a code blue,” he said out of breath.
“Oh I’m sorry there’s no code blue,” said one of the doctors.
“Are you sure, maybe we should check on some of the important patients just in case?”
“Ok, we might as well since we’re up”
They walked down the long hall their steps echoing every time they took a step. They checked most of the rooms then came to a room of a 3-week-old infant that was sick. They quietly walked into the room and the mood intensified as they realized that the infant wasn’t breathing. They had to act fast. Heart racing he rushed to the side of the infant’s bed and tried to resuscitate it. Eventually he resuscitated the baby and the baby woke up again. This was one moment, which helped him to decide to be a pediatrician.
He was just an intern and he saved an infants life. He went to medical school at the University of Arizona and out of 1000 applicants he was one of the 32 to get in, and is currently a doctor. He says his reason for helping people is that “Everybody’s here only a certain length of time on this earth, usually less than 100 years, and you should do something that helps other people in your time” He likes to get to know his patients both professionally and socially, and enjoys working with kids more than working with adults.
If you ask him if he thinks he is a hero he will say no because he says he’s just doing his job his description of a hero is an old black woman with 6 kids who works 3 jobs just to make sure her kids are happy. His personal here is Pat Tillman who was a football who could have been one of the best, but after 9/11 he gave up his big paying job and his fame and joined the military to fight for his country. But I think Dr. George Darwin is a hero to me and to all the lives he’s saved and people he’s helped.

Catching the signal from one of her friends, Angela brushed her skirt, took a deep breath and walked to where he was sitting. She was a snail while nervously walking to his chair. She was shaking like an earthquake when she got to him. Her mind flashed back to the time he had smiled at her and asked, “hey can I borrow a pencil”. “Hey Angela what’s up?” he said carelessly
“Um I uhhh” She said biting her lip as she snapped back from her flashback
“Is something wrong?”
“I uhhhh…. Never mind” She said as she walked away shamefully
“That chick is as crazy as a cuckoo bird cashing a cats check,” he said to his friends
Angela walked slowly back to her chair and plopped down in it as her friends gave her comforting stairs of affection.

Sonic Silence

My heart raced with excitement just before we stepped on stage. My memory flashed back to the rehearsal we had an hour ago. It took us three try’s to get it right then and that was only in front of the other bands now it was in front of a crowd of strangers. We made a dramatic entrance as the announcer spoke “They say just before a sonic boom there’s SONIC SILENCE”.

The drummer clicked us off. Click, click, click, click, and our bass player came to life and played. I waited for the part where I started playing while I looked into the audience and estimate how many people there were. There were a lot more than I expected. It was like a sea of random faces. Then my guitar sprang to life as I started to play. It started off great we were almost like a recording. Then came the second verse which we weren’t very confident about. Our singer started to sing but it was like someone had stolen the right words from her memory. We realized she must have forgotten the lyrics and was improvising which was fine except the rest of us couldn’t figure out how long to play the verse it was like suddenly the whole world had changed.

Luckily after looking around at my band mates confusing faces we came to a silent agreement to start the chorus. We blazed through the chorus like a wild fire and continued onto the bridge. We played the bridge as the singer sang then came time for my guitar solo. I had been practicing it all week, but suddenly my mind went blank like someone had erased the chalkboard that was my memory. So I had to improvise. I was so nervous my hands were shaking like an Eskimo in the arctic so it was extremely hard to finish the solo.

The rest of the song was perfect right up until the ending which we hadn’t practice as much and in rehearsal we had done terrible. At that point everyone was lost. Everyone was following some one else like a confused conga line of doom. Then thankfully the drummer found an opportunity and signaled the ending.

We didn’t exactly know where to exit on the stage so we just left from the way came. We saw the other bands and they said “good job” and we wished them good luck and headed for the exit as excited as a little kid on Christmas morning. We confessed all of our mistakes and how relieved we were that the show was over. After all the bands had finished playing their songs everyone came outside and we reflected on how awesome everyone did. The energy after that show was intense everyone was so excited and relieved. The parents to pictures so they could remember the moment, but I knew I wouldn’t need a picture to remember this experience.

Sensory detail:sound

It sounds like a train going by a house making metal pipes shake. Knocking things off there shelves and waking the residents of the house. Then passes temporarily leaving the house in peace.

Then it starts sounding like a ghostly wail in a rickety old haunted house. Then the symphony of harmonicas and trumpets comes in. Joining the ghostly wail in it's sad lonely song and makes the room shake even more like it might cave in. Slowly scaring away everyone who comes near making the ghost wail more in it's loneliness.

Also it kind of sounds like a hollow metal pole being slammed against a hard metal wall making it vibrate violently. Shaking wildly back in worth making a weird swooping sound.

It reminds me of the sound of the sea of nothing in the yellow submarine movie. Hollow and ominous like there is nothing there, but makes a sound anyway just to be heard. It also reminds me of The Beatles song "Northern Song" the way you can complain about what it sounds like but it will still sound the same and there's no changing that. Also sometimes there's nothing to complain about.

Lastly it sounds like a lonely harmonica player playing his lonely song while locked in jail. Just like he's waiting for someone to join his sad song so maybe he might not be so lonely. Then he finds his song can't reach anyone so he stops playing.

The Locker Problem

Locker Problem

The locker problem was that there were 1000 lockers and each locker needed to be tested by being opened and shut. The first kid opened all the lockers then the second kid changed the state of every other locker then the third kid every three lockers etc…
After going through all the numbers we found there were 31 lockers open. Those specific lockers are open because they were changed the state of an odd number of times like open close open. Strangely all the open lockers are perfect squares like 1 4 9 16 ect... I think the perfect squares are all open because each perfect square goes up by an different odd number. More specifically every locker goes up by a higher odd number as shown in my diagram below. I think this effects why the lockers were open an odd number of times.

S.L.O.B What I did this weekend

She walked to the wall crying yet again. She wrote down her feelings of sorrow on the small slip of paper and put it on the wailing wall. She cried her eyes out for another few minutes then went back to June, Lily, Rosaleen, and Neil in the kitchen.

She noticed the burnt pancake in the trash and that lily was gone she started to hum "oh! susanna" which made June come and comfort her. Neil left after eating a pancake as May finally calmed down. June went to go practice her cello leaving May alone in the kitchen.

She started making another pancake as she thought about what lily might be doing and if she would want another pancake.
